I used to do this religiously, and somehow, I got out of the habit. So today I got my fractionated coconut oil and my OnGuard essential oil, and I mixed up my favorite mouth-swishing potion.
Why oil pulling?
Back in my early 20s, I was very ill. My moods were imbalanced, my skin was a wreck, and my body pretty much hated me. I found my way to an Ayurvedic doctor named Pratima Raichur, and she set me on the path of natural health and healing.
One of her suggestions for daily detoxification was taking some sesame oil or coconut oil, and swishing it around in my mouth for up to 20 minutes. At first, this seemed insane. What 20-year-old has time to swish around anything except maybe some tequila.
But I was desperate to feel better, so I was willing to try anything.
And turns out, I totally loved it.
I found it to be extremely meditative. And on top of that, my teeth looked whiter and felt less sensitive. Also, better breath. But if you are using raw coconut oil, do not spit it out in the sink. Major clogging problems. I learned this the hard way. ALSO. Never swallow. Always spit in the trash. At the end of the 20 minutes, you will have some serious toxins in your mouth, so be sure to expell the mixture completely from your body, rinse your mouth, and then brush.
Since I discovered essential oils, I started adding an essential oil blend that contains Clove oil, which is the most powerful antioxidant on the planet. Clove can also create a numbing effect, so the combination of the two properties was extremely effective for my sensitive chompers. ESPECIALLY at the dentist. I used to scream in pain when getting my teeth scraped, but the addition of the essential oil helped to improve my overall gum health and decrease sensitivity. I actually ENJOY going to the dentist now. SERIOUSLY.
Why does this work?
I think Dr. Josh Axe says it perfectly: "Oil pulling works by cleaning (detoxifying) the oral cavity in a similar way that soap cleans dirty dishes. It literally sucks the dirt (toxins) out of your mouth and creates a clean, antiseptic oral environment that contributes to the proper flow of dental liquid that is needed to prevent cavities and disease."

6-8 drops Fractionated coconut oil (1-2 tsps raw coconut oil works also)
2-3 drops OnGuard essential oil
Either premix the combo and store in a dropper bottle, or add drops directly onto the tongue - add coconut oil first since OnGuard is spicy.
Swish between 5-10 minutes.
Expel into the trash.
